Maria Pinto (b. 2005 in Lisbon, Portugal) is an Amsterdam-based artist, currently studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Her work is often born from little observations of quotidian life, routines and habits, all that takes place in between the “big life happenings”. She finds great interest in the circularity of our day to day and of life itself. In her practice, these become patterns and choreographies, repetition over repetition, letting the work transform within itself, sometimes losing track of its initial form. Regularly, she touches on themes such as loss, grief, nostalgia, saudade and unconscious traditions, sentiments that are part of the general human experience, and recreates moments of her personal life, staging these stories and worlds through the design of spaces and sets. Nonetheless, Maria believes such themes can be approached in playful ways, and she often invites the audience to take part on the play, and consequently letting them become part of the work.
